How U.S. Consumers Think About and Engage with Smart Energy

What are the needs and wants of energy consumers today? And how can electric utilities and their partners effectively reach them and engage them in programs and services? Distilling insights from all of Smart Energy Consumer Collaborative's 2017 consumer research projects, this session will provide attendees with a deeper understanding of how U.S. consumers think about and engage with smart energy, their energy providers and the various products and services this broader energy ecosystem enables. Attendees will also hear actionable takeaways on what today's consumers want and real-life examples of consumer engagement successes.

Colleen Ewell is the Director of Customer Engagement for Ameren Illinois. In this role, Colleen is responsible for the oversight of customer interactions throughout the organization. Her mission is to provide continuous improvements in both customer perceptions and overall customer satisfaction.

Colleen's overall mission is to turn customers into advocates, which she accomplished prior and since joining Ameren. Colleen served as an Account Director for multiple advertising agencies including Epsilon, Woodruff Sweitzer, Paradowski Creative and Osborn Barr, where she has worked extensively with several Fortune 500 organizations including Nestle Purina, Bayer/Monsanto, Energizer Holdings and Anheuser-Busch InBev throughout her career.

Doug Lewin leads CLEAResult's policy efforts. Headquartered in Austin, Texas, CLEAResult designs, markets, and implements energy efficiency programs for over 250 utilities and businesses in 40 states and provinces. Prior to joining CLEAResult, Lewin was the founding Executive Director of the South-central Partnership for Energy Efficiency as a Resource (SPEER). SPEER was recognized by the US Department of Energy as the regional energy efficiency organization (REEO) for Texas and Oklahoma, working with a network of REEOs throughout the US to advance energy efficiency. Doug worked at the Texas Legislature for five years, primarily on clean energy issues for three different elected officials in the House and Senate. He earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the University of Texas at Austin.

Janice Wakeley is a consumer insight strategist and marketing leader who effectively collaborates with cross functional teams and senior executives to create positive outcomes. She has been in her current role as Senior Research Analyst at ComEd for seven years, using research to strategically enhance the customer experience, improve brand perception, and achieve the company's business goals. Prior to ComEd, Janice held director-level positions at Impact Consumer Research, C&R Research, and CNA.

Nathan Shannon is the Deputy Director of the Smart Energy Consumer Collaborative. In this role, he is responsible for advancing a consumer-friendly, consumer-safe smart grid through research and education. During his tenure, SECC has grown to over 155 members and produced many pieces of foundational consumer focused research. Nathan is also responsible for member recruitment and engagement as well as presenting SECC research at conferences and providing thought-leadership on smart grid enabled technologies and programs. In his previous role as Director of Operations and Major Gifts Officer at Athens Land Trust he had a focus on policy and sustainability through his work with land conservation and carbon credits. He also gained extensive knowledge in the realm of non-profit development and capacity building. Nathan has a Bachelors in Economics from the University of Georgia and a background in financial management.

Andy has helped manage complex organization-wide systemic customer change initiatives and business process and organizational redesign projects involving large teams and multiple work streams, delivering several multi-million dollars worth of financial benefits to his clients.
